If you've never heard the name Harry Dresden before then please pick up Jim Butcher's first book Storm Front.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things -- and most of them don't play well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a -- well, whatever.

There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get... interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

You can find him in the yellow pages, under WIZARD he's the only one there:

HARRY DRESDEN — WIZARD

Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations.
Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Curses, Parties or Other Entertainment

Give this one a go for sure!

Indeed, and each book in this series is better than the last!  I'm fiending for the next one, which I think is due out this spring.  There was also a short-lived series on the Sci Fi Channel which is available on dvd, but it was canceled after only a few episodes.  I'm too big a geek for the books to get into the show too deeply, because I catch myself nit-picking every detail that they changed, but objectively they're both good, just different.  Harry also turns up in short stories in a couple of collections.

Sorry, trying not to gush, but I can't recommend these books highly enough.

The Dresden books are definitely in my queue.

I'm currently reading his Codex Alera series and really enjoying it. Highly recommended author.

I haven't yet read the books, but the too-short Dresden Files TV show was well worth watching. Fans/readers have all said the books were even better, not to miss them.

I read the first book and really enjoyed it.  I need to scrape together some time to dig deeper.

I just ordered the first three books for the Codex Alera cause I have that much faith in Mr. Butcher. I can't wait til they arrive, but much like Les I am jones'n for the next Dresden book.

The Syfy (oh the new moniker) series was about 12 episodes and I'll admit like Les I was much the nit picker until the last four episodes where they finally said "let's make good TV instead of trying to make the book for TV" however too little too late, canceled. Terrance Man was awesome as Bob, he really nailed the essence of the character from the get go even with it's origin story changes.

BTW Les have you ever checked out the graphic novels Butcher has done between books?

I've been listening to the Harry Dresden books from Audible.com.  They're read by James Marsters and he does an excellent job.  I really liked the first book, but the ones after have sort of lost it for me.  I didn't even finish listening to the fourth book, but I've heard the series sort of turns the corner after that one, so I may pick up book 5 and try it again.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Dresden Files. I was there from the release of the first book.  The series was actually picking up steam when it was canceled.  I bought the series on DVD and pull it out every once and a while.

I am a Harry/Murphy shipper Wink

If you want an intro to the storyline.. read Restoration of Faith.. it's short and the genesis of how Harry got involved with Karrin Murphy and the cops. http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden/restoration/

I love these books.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that James Marsters does the audiobooks and let me tell you, I could listen to him read all day.  And the books aren't half bad either!  The first three weren't bad.  Honestly though book 4 was a real turning point for the series and it's grown that much better with each book.  I highly recommend!

Bless the makers, I now have a reason to go to Dragon Con...

@Les Howard

Yes give them a look see. One of them actually explains an event that Jim Butcher put into one of the books.
